Sleep apnea is a rather common disorder, but if not treated can become rather serious.

There are two main forms of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea occurs when the signals sent from the brain to the chest muscles which help your breathe while sleeping is interrupted. If these signals are not received, your body will not breathe regularly. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when there is a blockage of your airways while asleep.

Sleep apnea’s most common cause is excess weight and obesity. Other risk factors include a narrow throat, thick neck and round head, hypothyroidism, excessive growth, allergies and a deviated septum, difficulties with the brain stem, stroke, or certain medicines such as narcotics. Males over the age of 40 are at an increased risk for sleep apnea. You are also at a heightened risk if you have an enlarged tongue, a deviated septum, large tonsils, a sinus infection, or nasal blockages.
